Revision Rhinoplasty
About 15 years ago, we were living in Antalya for a while because of my husband’s
temporary assignment.
One day we went to a construction market.
When I got to the cashier, I noticed that the person at the cashier’s nose had been
operated on and the result was very noticeably problematic.
I couldn’t stand it, I approached him. I asked, “Did you have a nose operation?”
I took out my card and gave it to him, saying, “If you want, we can make a more
aesthetically pleasing nose.”
Actually, this is not my style at all. I was also aware that what I did was rude.
I’ve probably never done that again in my life. The young man naturally got upset,
he didn’t even want to take the card. The atmosphere suddenly became cold.
As we were leaving, my husband told me that it was very rude. He said, “He’s right
to react however he wants to you.” I said, “He’ll call me.” He said, “He’ll never
call.” Moreover, I wasn’t using social media at that time, so he had no chance to
see the results I had done. About two months passed. He called me. He said he
wanted information about the surgery. My business card only had my address in
Istanbul, and I told him, “We can have your surgery in Antalya.”
Also, since I was the one offering, I didn’t think it was right to discuss the fee. I
said, “I can perform the surgery, you just have to cover the hospital expenses.”
At that time, I had just started working in Antalya, and we performed the surgery at
a hospital.
The Impact of Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is a surgery that really affects a person’s life.
There is a big difference between a nose that has never been operated on and a
nose that has been operated on but had a bad result.
A nose that has been operated on and failed attracts much more attention on the
person’s face and has a much bigger psychological impact.
Therefore, revision surgery is not only a physical but also a psychological
correction.
After this surgery I performed in Antalya, nurses, anesthesia technicians,
anesthesiologists, and their relatives from the same hospital contacted me.
None of this was on my mind when I was considering performing the surgery, but
this surgery was a turning point for me, albeit a small one.
Over time, this patient circle grew and played an important role in the development
of my practice in Antalya. Later, I opened a clinic in Antalya and have been
performing surgeries in both cities for about 15 years.
My Approach to Revision Surgery
Revision surgery is different from primary surgeries. When I go into these surgeries,
I always think: “I have only one chance, and I need to completely solve this
problem.”
Therefore, revision surgeries must be performed:
With proper planning
With the right technique
Under optimum conditions.
Cartilage Requirement
One of the most important issues in revision surgeries is cartilage support.
Since we use micromotors in our surgeries, the need for extra cartilage is often
less.
However, in some cases, additional cartilage may be necessary. In this case, there
are two options:
Use of ready-made (synthetic/processed) cartilage
Taking cartilage from the patient’s own body
Ready-made cartilage can be used in small and limited areas. However, generally,
especially in young and healthy patients, I prefer to use their own tissue.
Cartilage Sources
There are two main options for taking cartilage from your own body:
Ear
Ribs
I almost never use ear cartilage for aesthetic purposes.
Rib cartilage, on the other hand, may seem daunting to patients at first. Patients
who have had previous surgery may be particularly concerned about this.
However, in reality:
The procedure takes approximately 15-20 minutes
A small incision of about 2 cm is made
The healing process is generally problem-free
To date, I have not had a patient who experienced serious problems with this.
Cartilage taken from your own tissue is an extremely safe and effective solution in
revision surgeries.
Conclusion
Revision rhinoplasty is a specialized surgery that requires experience, planning,
and the right technique.
The aim of this surgery is not just to correct the shape; it is to restore both the
patient’s appearance and self-confidence.
